eATA Carnets – A Smarter Way to Move Goods Across Borders
International trade is moving towards a fully digital future. One of the most significant changes is the introduction of eATA Carnets – the electronic version of the familiar ATA Carnet document, often known as the “passport for goods.” This development will modernise how temporary exports are managed and cleared through international customs.
As a busy UK carnet provider, we’re helping our clients and their businesses prepare for this shift with practical support, clear guidance, and up-to-date information on how digital carnets will work and what they will mean for your operations.
What is an eATA Carnet?
An eATA Carnet is the digital equivalent of the paper ATA Carnet. It allows the same temporary movement of goods across borders without paying import duties or taxes on goods as exists currently. These goods typically include commercial samples, professional equipment, and items for exhibitions or trade shows.
The digital system, developed by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in partnership with the World Customs Organization (WCO), streamlines the entire lifecycle of a carnet - from issuing and declaring to tracking and closing. Everything is handled electronically through a secure app and customs portal.
The UK is one of the early participants in the global transition, with full adoption of digital carnets expected by 2028.
Benefits for Our Clients
Quicker Border Crossings
Digital carnets will reduce the volume of paperwork and speed up processing, allowing goods to pass through customs more efficiently.
Lower Risk of Delays or Errors
One of the main aims of EATA carnets is to minimise manual errors, reduce the likelihood of delays, fines, or disputes at the border.
Secure and Convenient
Documents will be stored digitally, meaning no risk of losing paperwork in transit. Everything will be accessed securely via the mobile app.
Real-Time Tracking and Updates
You'll be able to view live status updates and access your carnet information any time, from anywhere.
Better for the Environment
By cutting down on printing, courier services, and paper storage, digital carnets will help reduce waste and lower your business’s carbon footprint.
Future-Proofed Trade Documentation
Digital carnets will soon become the standard. Becoming familiar with them and how they work before they're fully adopted will help your business stay compliant and competitive as global procedures change.
Supporting You Through the Transition
We’re closely involved in the shift to eATA Carnets and are making sure our team are fully informed on current pilot schemes, customs updates, and rollout plans. Whether you're travelling to a country already using digital carnets or one still relying on paper documents, we’ll make sure you're prepared with the right documentation.
During this interim period, both paper and digital versions will be used in parallel. We can advise on mixed itineraries, help you understand the process, and ensure your team knows what to expect.
Looking ahead, digital carnets will make international travel with goods simpler, faster, and more secure.
